What Every Pet Bird Should Have

Prior to purchasing a bird as a pet, there are a few things you must provide to have happy and healthy pet.

Large Cage -  The longer the bird is expected to be confined in the cage the larger the cage should be. The cage should be of nontoxic materials, easy to clean, and strong enough to prevent "dismantling" by the bird. Perches of appropriate sizes (from nontoxic wood or materials) need to be placed so the bird has adequate moving space for itself and it's tail. The number of perches depends on the size of the cage, however they must be placed so they do not catch droppings from bird or contaminated food.
Toys -  Colorful, and of non toxic material, easy to clean.. Toys serve as a diversion and encourages physical exercise. They can be as simple as a rawhide chew, pinecone, or corn on the cob.
Diet -  Your birds diet is critical to his care. Birds dietary needs vary with species. There are many commercially formulated diets that are excellent. That with special treats of seeds, fresh fruits, and vegetables can form a well balanced diet.
Hygiene-  As important as diet is cleanliness. This includes perches, cage, food bowls, water bowl, cage bottom( which can be covered with wood chips, chopped corn cob), etc, . Birds should be prevented from having direct contact with droppings on the bottom of the cage.
Environment-  A healthy bird can tolerate some change in temperatures. However if you are uncomfortable so might be your bird. Opportunities for fresh air and sunlight should be provided at times and would be beneficial. Safety is critical. Be aware of Ceiling fans, open windows, pots on the stove, fumes from insecticides, etc.
General Care- Most birds are intelligent, active creatures. They love to socialize. Having the cage near the family activity gives them a feeling of belonging. Throw in a lot of love and attention and you have a loving pet.

And remember - most birds do have a long life expectancy - so you can expect the rewards of your labor for many years.
